We recently worked on a Raleigh home where the homeowners wanted quieter stairs but still wanted to show off the hardwood.
First, we refinished the hardwood treads. Then we installed a carpet runner down the center, leaving the wood visible along both sides.
For this project, we used a Dreamweaver Exceptional II runner in style 7404, color Electron 972. At the bottom of the stairs, we installed Riverstone Amber Tide LVP so the lower-level flooring worked naturally with the refinished hardwood.
The result was a mix of wood, carpet, and LVP that feels connected instead of looking like three separate flooring choices.

In our experience, yes, when you want quiet steps and a little grip without covering the whole tread. The Raleigh job above used Dreamweaver Exceptional II in Electron on refinished hardwood. Kids, dogs, and guests all use those stairs. A runner also lets the wood still show on both sides.
